Any opinions on the D120 and K120 reconed with the modern kit?
Aftermarket kits are fine. It is the only option for a rebuild at this point.
$550 for a set of D120f with a 70s Waldon recone a fair deal? I haven’t watched these speakers long enough to know where the pricing sweet spot is.

Thx!

I notice some of you are using the E120s. I know the D120 is damn near unobtanium and the K120 seems to be about the same. Is the E120 considered the good available and affordable substitute or do some of you prefer it?
You really need try each with your rig if at all possible. My rig really sings with the E120s and I just haven't been that thrilled with the K120s or the D120s. The E120s seem to give me the right blend of warmth and clipping (keep in mind I have a modded rig that has been optimized for E120s). The K120s seem a tad bright for my rig, and the D120s are too thin (bright + lack of warmth). I have the convenience of long-time speaker tech in my area so I drop in with my rig and play around. Each of those speakers has different magnets and different power ratings.

So where exactly are you now on this, Rob?
I’m looking to start with getting the speakers and work from there. Acquiring those seems to be the most daunting of tasks so I’d like to focus my energies there. As expected, there’s no right answer as to D120 vs K120 vs E120. Most seem to prefer the D120 so I’m going to see what I can do there. My ideal setup on paper is the Maestro Twin > SSP cab w/ D120s.

I’m talking with a guy who has a SF Twin with JBL 120s for a good price. He’s going to confirm which 120s tonight. If they are D or K, it’s totally worth it value-wise. It would put me ahead on both the speaker and amp fronts.

My orange frame D120f speakers (which I think are actually k120s labeled as D120s during JBL’s transition from D’s to K’s) definitely have more of a sizzle vs my Beyma Liberty’s in my Waldo’ized twin. I adjust the eq accordingly with each set. I like both but I’m not currently in a band so not sure which one I would use in that setting. Chicago area need a Jerry? I’m in!! :-)

Looks like that local SF Twin has 1xK120 and 1xE120. Interesting to mix the AlNiCo with the ceramic. Anyone ever find success in doing this? I know a lot of people do it in general outside of the Jerrified rig circles.

EDIT: the K120 is actually a 2130. Not the smokin deal I thought it was! But still interesting nonetheless. I like the idea of killing two birds with one stone. I look at it like for $700 I’m getting $250-$300 in speakers and a $400-$450 Twin I can eventually send to Waldo. Idk. Thoughts?

This is what I've referred to before as "an almost piezo-like quality" to the speakers. It works in some settings, not in others. My amp tech, Pete Cage, puts it this way: "There are no 'bad' speakers, only speakers looking for the right applications."

For those interested, I bought the ‘76 Twin loaded with JBLs and put down my deposit with Wald. In its current state, this amp is already soooo f’n sweet! I own and have owned very nice contemporary and vintage amps and there’s a lot of mojo in this beast! I can’t stop playing through it.

You are going to dig it for sure. Enjoy and your Jerry tone search will pretty much end as far as the amp part of the equation is concerned. Congrats

My 74’ was barely working when I gave it to Mike. His work under the hood is clean and neat. All this talking about it, goin to flip her on now and play away. The hardest part is the wait!!
